Dulunya bernama Kusno. Karena sakit-sakitan, oleh bapaknya nama Kusno diganti dengan Sukarno. Umur 24 tahun Sukarno berteriak : Kita harus merdeka sekarang! Akibatnya dia dipenjara. Dituduh menghasut dan memberontak seperti Komunis. Dia makin menggugat. Pledoinya “Indonesia Menggugat” di pengadilan membuat dia dibuang ke Ende, lalu Bengkulu.

Di kota terakhir ini Soekarno istirahat dari politik. Hatinya tertambat pada gadis muda bernama Fatmawati. Padahal saat itu Soekarno masih menjadi suami Inggit Garnasih; Perempuan lebih tua dari Soekarno, yang selalu menjadi perisai baginya tatkala di penjara dan dibuang. Inggit harus rela melihat sang suami tercinta jatuh cinta dengan gadis lain. Di tengah kemelut rumah tangganya, Jepang datang memulai peperangan Asia Timur Raya. Berahi politiknya kembali menguat. Kemerdekaan Indonesia seolah diambang mata.

Hatta dan Sjahrir, rival politik Soekarno dimasa muda mengingatkan bahwa Jepang tidak kalah bengisnya dengan Belanda. Soekarno punya sudut pandang berbeda. 'Jika kita cerdik, kita bisa memanfaatkan Jepang untuk upaya meraih kemerdekaan Indonesia' kata Soekarno. Hatta terpengaruh. Tapi Sjahrir tidak. Bekerjasama dengan Jepang sama saja memposisikan Indonesia menjadi bagian dari Fasisme.

Soekarno tidak peduli. Dia yakin dengan pilihannya: bekerjasama dengan Jepang untuk Indonesia Merdeka. Bersama Hatta, Soekarno berupaya mewujudkan cita-citanya mewujudkan Indonesia Merdeka.
